At twenty-one he enlisted in the 31st Indiana Infantry, Company A for the Civil War, serving as a private until 1862 when discharged for disability. He entered the State University of Michigan studying law in addition to regular subjects and graduated 1867. After practicing law in Evansville, Indiana for one year he abandoned that profession for the career of a journalist. He spent eight years in the far West, the first year as editor of the Salt Lake Reporter. His Life in Utah, Western Wilds and the Men Who Redeem Them, and The Undeveloped West are the results of his experiences in the western states. Condition Description: Good with worn edges and spine ends. Rather tight textblock. Cracked and chipped endpapers. Hinge tape repair inside front cover and to title and preface pages with additional cracked hinges, mostly at rear cover. Age toning. Smudges and occasional stains on some pages .
