The coat's brand, Lilli Ann, is a well-known and respected name in the fashion industry, and its style is truly unique. Adolph Schuman started his Lilli Ann label of women’s clothing in 1938, achieving sales over a million dollars and his face on the front cover of Time Magazine in 1940. His designs and sketches were often produced as he sat in his factory canteen with a scruffy black poodle at his feet. But growing frustrated at the severe lack of suitable fabrics available to him during these post war years, he toured Europe visiting weaving mills that had not changed to munitions factories as many did, and continued to struggle on weaving tiny quantities of the most exquisite and valuable fabrics, silks, specialty mohair wools, saving them away from bankruptcy by placing large orders with the mills as well as at the same time directing the their workers were paid appropriately and good working conditions were established. He also visited the UK, where notable and priceless wool tweeds were produced by both Scottish and Irish weaving mills. After silks, for me the bulky and especially coveted tweed fabrics are the jewel of the Lilli Ann Collections. I have in my life seen only two coats of this quality, bought both, sold one and now only have this one. For any vintage clothing enthusiast this coat is sure to be a cherished and valuable investment. In the world of antiques and investment, any piece that has stood the test of time is an investment particularly when it looks as good as this coat does after 70 odd years. Both the coat and the lining are in very good condition with many years of wear left. The tag says WOVEN IN SCOTLAND FOR LILI ANN. The tweed is akin to Donegal tweed more commonly originating from Donegal in Ireland. This is ‘ a heavy woolen homespun characterized by colorful slubs in the weft yarn and a neutral color in the warp. also : a tweed of similar character woven plain or twill from wool or other fibers. The wool is a unique melange which refers to mix of fibers that are crossed dyed to create a heathered effect which translate to a mixed fiber content that are featured on the coat).
