Victorian Touchmarked Lead Pewter Quart Measure Tankard With Verification Stamps

Description: I often accept reasonable offers, feel free to make me one! An incredible old Victorian era English lead pewter "Measure" tankard, with many other marks and verification stamps! How do we date this tankard? The earliest stamp it bears is a crown with the initials V R beneath it - this is the mark of the reign of Victoria Regina, Queen of England, who ruled from 1837 until her death on 22 January 1901. Due to the style and patina, it was likely manufactured around the mid 1800's, making it roughly 175 - 188 years old! It also bears the stamp of her son and heir Edward Regina (Another crown with "E R" under it), signifying that this measure tankard was still in use as a certified measure vessel until at least 1901 when the reign of King Edward VII of England began. What is it? A certified measure vessel was inspected by the crown to ensure merchants and barmen could not cheat customers by selling smaller amounts and charging for larger amounts. The "QUART" mark on the front stated the vessel's capacity, and the other stamps around the rim are periodic inspection marks. There are numerous inspection marks on this tankard, showing it was in use for many years before finally being retired some time in the reign of King Edward. How it ended up in the United States is anyone's guess, but my bet is that it came back with a U.S. soldier either after WW1 or WW2 - If this thing could talk what a story It would surely have to tell! It is large and heavy, at 6 3/4 inches in height, 4 5/8 inch base diameter, 6 3/4 inches from the back of the handle to the front edge of the mug, and weighs 1 lb 12 oz.
