Hardcover (No Dustjacket) Green cloth boards with bright gilt decoration and titling. The cloth shows considerable edgewear, corners rubbed and frayed. Spine frayed in places along vertical edges; tip and tail of spine are frayed and missing some cloth. Both front and rear hinges are fragile or broken and mostly (rear) disconnected, but sewing of the textblock is tight; first 3 leaves are loose, rest is tight. Brown endpapers are brittle and flaky at the edge. Front flyleaf has a very lightly written (barely legible) owner's name. Tissue-protected frontis plate (see photo) with many additional quarter and half-page plates interspersed in text. The text paper is lightly tanned with some foxing and small spots seen.7" x 10" 233 p. plus publisher advertisements. One of two Dickens novels published in Dickens' weekly "Master Humphrey's Clock" (1840-41) and printed in book form in 1841. There have been multiple film and television adaptations of the story of 14-year-old Nell Trent and her grandfather, residents of the Old Curiosity Shop in London, whose lives are thrown into disarray and destitution for an evil money lender.
