Description: Stoner • 1st Edition, First Printing • John Williams • Butcher's Crossing. Stoner by John Williams. First edition and first printing with a laid in postcard Williams wrote to friend and colleague Gerald Champman. Chapman, a then recent Harvard grad, was hired to chair the University of Denver English department in 1962 where he would double the size of the department. Gerald (Jerry) Chapman was along with John Williams, a co-founder of Denver Quarterly in 1966. The text of the postcard suggests they had a playful and close friendship. He signs the card in the familiar, “John” at the end of the text. The front of the postcard depicts the dining hall, looking very Hogwarts, at Lincoln College, Oxford England. The postmark on the card suggests he mailed it while visiting there. An absolutely perfect piece to lay into a book which centers around a college professor and some of the pressures and administrative nuances that come with it. The book has become very scarce in its first edition. Scarcer still with a dust jacket in good working order and little star damage. .
