Description: Sterling Silver Overlay Belt Buckle Heavy Gauge Man in the Maze Hopi B&A Koinva This is an outstanding sterling silver belt buckle with the design created using an overlay technique. Heavier gauge silver was used for the base; it is oxidized (darkened) and amazingly hand textured. The Man in the Maze pattern was created by cutting it out of a second sheet of heavy gauge silver and soldered to the base layer. The hand crafting of this piece is phenomenal. The buckle is 3" wide and 1 7/8" tall. The buckle loop will fit up to a 1 1/2" wide belt. It weighs a hefty 56 g. The artist's hallmark is a sunface (or sunface forehead) with a snake, which is a pictograph for renowned Hopi artisan couple Berna and Anderson Koinva. Anderson is the grandson of one of the most famous Hopi silversmiths, Paul Saufkie, who, with Fred Kaboutie, were the original instructors of the Hopi Silvercraft Guild which began in 1947.
