Description: A rare item. A genuine scrapbook of a Savile Row tailor, George Oaker of G. L. & C. Oaker. 31 Savile Row. Compiled in the 1940s -1950s. Oakers was founded in the 1890s by Georges father and moved into Savile Row in the early 1900s. In 1939 Oakers bought the business of Messrs West and Son Ltd. George Oaker became one of "The Big Tenners" on the Men's Fashion Council in the 1940s. G. L. & C. Oaker continued to trade until being taken over by "Anderson & Sheppard" in 1965. This small scrap album is a unique piece of Savile Row, tailoring, history. In a used and worn condition but containg newspaper cuttings and articles, letters etc. The most interesting thing about this company is that there is very little, almost nothing about them on line or in any reference works, histories of Savile Row. However, reading the cuttings and letters it is obvious that they were highly appreciated by people in the know. Therefore, this album is possibly the only record, small history of this Savile Row tailoring firm in existence. Unique. X1
