Description: Lyndon B. and Lady Bird Johnson: Exceedingly RARE 1963 Official White House Christmas Card. 6.75" x 5" textured white card with embossed Presidential seal on the front. Red silk screen band below, and printed with a simple sentiment: "The President and Mrs. Johnson wish you a Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year." Condition is simply superb (possibly finest known example extant - AS SEEN).One week after Hallmark finished shipping the remaining Kennedy nativity Christmas cards to the White House on November 22, 1963, Chief of Protocol at the State Department, Angier Biddle Duke, recommended that President Johnson and the First Lady consider sending a holiday greeting card to select government officials to which the U.S. had close diplomatic ties. He suggested sending the cards to those officials the President had met, and specifically to those who had attended the Kennedy funeral. Very few of these cards were produced and thus they are considered to be the rarest of all White House Christmas cards. So rare in fact, that the card remained historically forgotten for over thirty years until careful research by the senior archivist at the Lyndon. B. Johnson Presidential Library in late 1995.
