Description: The first Pan American nonstop service connecting New York with Saudi Arabia was flown with the long-range Boeing 747SP. It covered some 7,000 miles, flown in slightly less than 12 hours eastbound and 13-3/4 hours westbound. Service was based on a Civil Aeronautics Board approved blocked space agreement between Saudia (the Arabian Airline) and Pan American. When Dhahran refused to backstamp the New York covers, the airline arranged for a February 6 machine backstamp by the U.S. Air Force Postal Service at Dhahran. This cover was carried on the February 2, 1979 inaugural Pan American Airlines flight from the John F Kennedy Airport Mail Facility in New York to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia (where it was backstamped) and is listed in The American Air Mail Catalogue as PA-F1f.
