It is NOT a vegetable. It, like other squashes, and melons and members of the Cucurbita family are FRUITS!!!! And in my opinion, if you're selling the seeds, this is some basic info that you SHOULD know. But, I guess that's just me being a perfectionist ;P This is a winter squash that has gigantic leaves and flowers! This squash blossom is so beautiful that it's just as fun to grow these plants for their gorgeous flowers (that are also edible by the way) as it is for it's L0VELY golden fruit. But if you're looking for a fantastic alternative to starchy pastas, then you're going to L0VE growing this plant!! Even if you're not into squash, this is a beautiful trellis plant that can bring in a TON of pollinators to your garden. I started growing these because they have such a long shelf life if they are properly cured. They will last about 6 months just sitting on a counter or in a pantry, if you allow the fruit to fully ripen and then spend a few weeks in a warm, dry spot allowing the skin to harden. Your fruits are cured when you can press your fingernail into it and it doesn't leave an indent. They're also super versatile; you can eat them raw, baked, freeze it, can it, ferment it, dry it for long term storage.... so many options!! It is a MUST for a prepper's seed bank, and with everything going on nowadays.... EVERYONE SHOULD BE A PREPPER! I've been growing the spaghetti squash for a few years, and I have ended up with a mix of these two types; one has a tapered more gourd like shape, and some them get HUGE... and the other looks more like a melon shape. They are both delicious, and fabulous! I don't know variety names, I just know they are heirloom. They come back every year the exact same way, using the seeds from that years fruits!! So, I've just mixed the two kinds together and you'll get a mix of the two. These seeds are from fruits from our 2022 plants, just recently harvested and dried. I allow the seeds to dry in their natural way, because I believe it increases the germination rate and makes for healthier plants. That means I allow the whole fruit to rot, spend some time in the cold weather like I would a perennial seed, and allow the surrounding flesh to deteriorate and then take what's left and spread it out on a screen to dry. Afterwards, I clean them without getting them wet. So the seeds don't appear squeaky clean like they do when you get them in a commercial seed pack. but I can assure you.... they are BETTER!!! :) Seeds are easy to sprout. Some prefer to soak them overnight before putting in soil or sprouting medium.Either way is fine. Keep the soil or medium moist but not wet. Overwet soil can result in rotted seeds.Keep the seeds warm, soil temp needs to be at least 60 degrees. This is a winter squash, so the best time to start these in in summer. I start mine in June, and set the transplants in early July. The plants L0VE high heat, but will continue to flower all the way until frost. Sunlight is recommended when sprouting the seeds, however it's not necessarily needed, as you should plant them at about 1/4" depth so they wouldn't get sunlight that deep anyway. Seeds normally will sprout within 10 days but could take a few days longer.Keep seedling watered daily so the tender roots don't dry out. Give these plants a LOT of room, as the foliage is HUGE and the runs can be many feet long!
