Died May 18, 1911, in Vienna. Mahler, the son of a poor Jewish innkeeper, won both piano and composition prizes as a student in Vienna. In his thirties he became one of Europe's most famous conductors, first in Prague, then in Hamburg and Vienna. But he grew increasingly unpopular with many of his colleagues - partly because of his dictatorial working habits and partly because of the era's anti-Semitism. In 1909 he came to America to head the New York Philharmonic, but his tenure lasted only two years because of illness. Throughout most of his life, Mahler led a full conducting schedule during the winter but reserved his summers for composing. He was the last of the great Romantic symphonists - a composer of large-scaled, emotionally intense, profound orchestral works and song cycles. During the first half of this century, Mahler's music was rarely performed, except by such disciples as conductor Bruno Walter. "My time will come," Mahler said and indeed it did in the 1950's and 1960's. As author David Hall expalins: "The circumstances of war, of overdeveloped technology and underdeveloped humanity... have posed hardcore questions of faith in human destiny that Mahler, as a solitary individual, tried to answer." Says critic-essayist Herbert Reid: "He does not spare today's generation of listeners from.. . stretching their emotional range." Mahler's massive, often sonically overwhelming symphonies are tailor-made for the hi-fi stereo age, pulling out all the stops not only for an orchestra but for recording engineers as well. (Roy Hemming, From Rock to Bach: A Musical Odyssey, 1974) Musique d'Or is an out-of-print series of full length classical music CD's that was marketed mainly in Europe in the 80's, but was also distributed in America by The Moss Music Group, and sold at retail by the now closed Rose Records chain. The recordings are bright, crisp digital recordings made mainly by leading European artists and orchestras, and packaged in environmentally friendly cardboard sleeves which was uncommon at the time. They've become hard to find, and harder to find in new condition! Don't pass this by - Get it now!
