DAVID SHAPIRO "David Shapiro, born in 1947, is a poet and art critic He has taught at Columbia University, Princeton University and is currently full professor of Art History at William Paterson College. He became editorial associate and wrote art criticism for Art News, then for Artforum, At in America and The New York Times. Among his publications are seven volumes of poetry, monographs on John Ashbury, Jim Dine, Jasper Johns and Piet Mondrian. He created an anthology entitled The New York Poets for Random House. A pioneer in the teaching of poetry to children and architects, he is preparing a volume on that subject. Shapiro is the recipient of many awards, including fellowships from the Merrill Foundation, the National Endowement for the Humanities and the National Endowement for the Arts, the National Academy and Institute for the Arts and Letters and the Graham Foundation. He has collabo- rated with many artists, such as Christian Haub, Jeremy Gilbert- Rolfe and Michael Goldberg. Hejduk's monument inspired by a Shapiro poem was dedicated to Vaclav Havel in the Castle of Prague. He co-authored the full-length drama with music by Laurie Anderson, Harrisburg Mon Amour. He contributed the afterword to a limited edition volume of Thomas Mann's The Black Swan, with illustrations by Hejduk, with whom he has collaborated on many books, masques and other architectural projects His most recent book is After a Lost Original, with Terry Winters (Solo Press). His writings on Jewish subjects and the Bible are represented in Congregation and Testimony, both edited by David Rosemberg. Recently, he has co-translated The Selected Poems of Jacques Dupin (Wake Forest) and The Eight Names of Picasso by Rafael Alberti (Gas Editions)."
