A wise woman once said, "A complete service for 12 should always have 13-14 of each piece. You never know!" and "You can never be too rich, too thin, or have too much Haviland....." Haviland & Co. is a manufacturer of Limoges porcelain. David Haviland was an American businessman from New York dealing with porcelain. While seeking out new business interests, he arrived in Limoges, France and by 1842, he was able to send his first shipment of Limoges porcelain to the United States. He was also key in adopting a new process by which to decorate porcelain pieces developed in 1873. In 1890, David Haviland's son, Théodore Haviland, built a very large and prominent factory in Limoges and introduced a variety of new processes for firing and decorating porcelain pieces. The Haviland company has since been overseen by grandson William Haviland, and great-grandson Theodore Haviland II. Haviland & Co. is still operating as Haviland Company, though the facilities are now modernized and now sell silverware, crystal, and giftware in addition to porcelain. Haviland identification is difficult as there are over 30,000 patterns and variations. To make it harder, most patterns do not have factory-given names. Only about 6,000 have been identified and cataloged in the Schleiger system. For those "named" patterns, many pieces left the factory without the proper pattern name marked on it. Even when whole sets are purchased, you will find pieces in the set without the pattern name or for pieces with multiple parts, some of the parts may lack the pattern name or even the Haviland mark. Thank you! Mr. Haviland!! THE MARK OF QUALITY!! This fine china was part of an inventory removed from the estate of an avid antique china collector after she died and the owners sold the home. This rare and very lovely china is about 100 years old. Most of this collection revolves around Theodore Haviland's early 1920's - 1930's china in the "PILGRIM" shape, all made out of the same shape molds, just decorated with different designs. This auction is for a very hard to find piece of Theodore Haviland china. The pattern on this piece is called "GANGA". It is in the Haviland Pilgrim form. The bottom is marked "Theodore Haviland, Limoges, France" This mark was used by Theodore Haviland from about 1920 - 1935. This is part of the Hostess serving pieces, usually referred to as a DEMITASSE CUP & SAUCER SET. CUP & SAUCER Demitasse is a heavy-bodied brew with a strong taste and low caffeine content. It is served to aid digestion and dispel the lingering effects of alcohol after a formal dinner where several wines are served. Demitasse means "half cup" in French, and the cup is approximately 2 ¼ inches in height and width, slightly shorter and narrower than the after-dinner coffee cup. These are also used for Espresso, Caffe, Latte's and Cappuccino's. The companion saucer measures about 4 ½ to 5 inches across. Guests at a formal dinner are seated at the table for hours, so in order to provide them with the opportunity to stretch and regroup, and to revive conversation, demitasse is presented in another room. The cup is filled half full (approximately 1.5 ounces). Customarily, at a formal affair, demitasse is followed by brandy or liqueur; entertainment-dancing or cards-may then commence. A second cup is not offered. This hard to find piece would not be found in what would be considered a "Standard" set of china. A piece like this would only be found in "Deluxe" sets or sold separate. USUALLY A SPECIAL ORDER ITEM When evaluating dinnerware china, always remember, for every 12 plates, cups and bowls etc., only ONE serving piece per kind, was made for each set. That is what makes these particularly hard to find and expensive. In Haviland's Pilgrim shape, Haviland used four sizes of saucers, 4 5/8" for demitasse and chocolate sets, 5 5/8" for standard flat sets AND in many cases, for bouillon cups, which sometimes would have 6 1/4" saucers. So, it is not unusual for bouillon cups to have either size. The 6 1/4" saucers were also used with Haviland's large 2 1/8" flat cups as sets. Cream soup bowls had 7 1/2" saucers as their mate. It was among an estate's china set consisting of Haviland Ganga and Haviland Montruex and Coromandel. If you look at them, they are almost alike in many ways. They were produced about the same time, 1920's. They have the same basic Haviland Pilgrim shape. The borders, floral design and baskets are very similar, particularly on the serving pieces. The pieces offered in this listing are ALL GANGA. Haviland's Ganga, the twin to Haviland's Coromandel pattern. The only difference between the two is Coromandel has a cream band around it, while Ganga has an all white body. Same shapes, same designs, same edge trim. This is a simply enchanting piece designed by Haviland & Company of Haviland Pottery in Limoges, France. The maker's mark on the bottom dates this piece to have been produced around 1920 til 1935. There have been magazine ads for this pattern available here on Ebay for Haviland Blois that date to 1925. CURRENT RETAIL PRICE: $59.99 (EACH SET) Condition: This piece of vintage china is about 90 years old. A miracle it survived this long. I see no apparent blemishes.
