Description: NOBLE, PETER (WELLES, ORSON). The Fabulous Orson Welles. London: Hutchinson, 1956. First Edition. Signed and inscribed by Orson Welles: “For Byron - a bad book for a good friend with affectionate regards, Orson Welles.” Laid in is a single page Autograph Letter Signed to the recipient, producer, actor, and radio personality Byron Kane from Orson Welles’ personal assistant, Ann Rogers, dated July 26, 1967 written on printed stationery. The letter reads in full: “Dear Mr. Kane, I managed to give Mr. Welles your letter and get the book [this book] inscribed at London airport, and I’m writing to say that I’m sending it at the same time as this note, but by book post. I’m sorry it took so long. I hope you won’t mind: I read the first few chapters and have ordered a copy from some second-hand booksellers. Mr. Welles is in Los Angeles right now for a day or two, doing a Dean Martin show; maybe you’ve seen him? With best wishes, Yours sincerely, Ann Rogers.” The letter is in fine condition with gentle creases from folding and with what appear to be two phone numbers written in ink in another hand to the upper left corner. The envelope is postmarked 27 July, 1967 and is hand-addressed to Mr. Kane in Beverly Hills, CA. This scarce full scale illustrated biography of Welles had only one small printing in England and has never been published in the U.S. With minor bumping to the corners, else fine in a bright near fine dust jacket with some slight edge wear, and a few chips and tears. Byron Kane (1923 - 1984) was an actor with Orson Welles’ CBS radio drama series, The Mercury Summer Theatre on the Air, and was in the August 9, 1946 production of Edward Ellsberg’s ‘Hell on Ice’ with Orson Welles, Lurene Tuttle, Earle Ross, John Brown, Elliott Reid, and Norman Field. In addition Byron Kane was a producer and actor, known for Peter Gunn (1958), The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976) and Lady Sings the Blues (1972).
