Description: Eulophia petersii (Large/Chunky form) This plant perfectly combines some of the best elements of succulents and orchids. It has rigid leaves with the shape and texture of a weird succulent, delicate and fragrant orchid flowers, caudex-like pseudobulbs, and it multiplies easily, although somewhat slowly. The inflorescence of this species is nearly 6' tall and loaded with flowers that last for months! It is native to Eastern Africa and has a huge range stretching from the Arabian Peninsula in the north all the way down to South Africa. This form is a larger, chunkier form, especially in regard to the pseudobulbs. You'll receive the 9" tall plant in the first four photos, bare-root, without soil or pot. The other photos are of the parent plant, from which this offset was taken, a photo for size reference, and flowers from previous years. This is a large, healthy, rooted plant with 1 main pseudobulb and a new pseudobulb developing at the base, and it's a mature plant of flowering age! For best growth:Soil/Medium: coarse, well draining, cactus/succulent soil; these do best in a chunkier mix that includes extra lava or pumice. Light: minimum 3-4 hours direct sun; morning sun/afternoon shade works great. Water: deeply every 2 weeks, let the soil dry between waterings. This desert orchid can take a lot of sun, but looks best with some afternoon shade or in a greenhouse with 30-40% shade cloth. It will be a deeper green in more shade, with the leaves stretching to be thinner and longer. It will be lighter green with golden hues when getting more sun, and the leaves will be shorter and wider. A deep pot is best, to accommodate the long thick roots. Giving them a winter break, where they’re kept dry for a few months, will encourage flowering in the spring.
