Description: Amazing picture here, a portrait of Colonel Dick Rutledge, a fellow who ran with some of the most notable figures of the old West. Last living Indian scout of Kit Carson famed band as of 1923 and when he died. We have pictured an article from the March 12, 1924 issue of the Iowa Press Citizen detailing some of his life and adventures. No date on the photo, we have only seen one other photo of him where he appears older, he lived to 95. Approximating his age in this photo as 70-75, that would put it in the 1915-1920 range. See those pictures and below for more of his biography. This is a picture of famous INDIAN SCOUT Col. Dick Rutledge. He was born in 1845 and in 1926 was the only living Indian scout. He worked with KIT CARSON, Col. Dick Rutledge was the last survivor of Kit Carson's Scouts. When a small boy he moved with his parents to Kansas and settled in historic Salt Creek Valley, near Leavenworth. He was a neighbor to playmate and schoolmate William Cody, who afterward became famous as "Buffalo Bill" Cody. In 1866 Col. Dick left Kansas with a wagon train bound for Denver Colorado. Andrew Rutledge, brother of Dick, had already gone to Colorado. The two went to Trinidad when they met Kit Carson and joined his Scouts. In personal appearance, Colonel Rutledge was almost the double of "Buffalo Bill". He was 6 feet Three and straight as an arrow, and wore long flowing hair and a goatee, in the traditional scout style made famous by "Buffalo Bill."Col. Rutledge died at his home in Denver April 9, 1940, at the age of almost 95 years.
