Audubon Scarlett Tanager, 1st Octavo Edition, Pl 209, archival framing w/pages

Description: Audubon Scarlett Tanager, 1st Octavo Edition, Plate 209, archival framing. This is a 1st Edition lithograph from John James Audubon's beautiful Octavo edition of his “The Birds of America”. 1st Edition Octavo lithographs are from the 1840’s and are over 175 years old. Included with this lithograph are pages 226-230, the complete writeup on the Scarlet Tanager (“black winged red bird”) from Audubon's “The Birds of America”. Male Scarlet Tanagers are among the most blindingly gorgeous birds in an eastern forest in summer, with blood-red bodies set off by jet-black wings and tail. They’re also one of the most frustratingly hard to find as they stay high in the forest canopy singing rich, burry songs. The yellowish-green, dark-winged females can be even harder to spot until you key in on this bird’s chick-burr call note. Initially the Octavo edition was produced by Audubon as an affordable alternative to his original Havell Edition which was produced for institutions. The 1st Octavo Edition contains 500 hand-colored lithographs measuring approximately 6 ½” x 10 ¼”. Octavo Audubon prints were lithographed and hand-colored by the studio of J.T. Bowen in Philadelphia from 1839 to 1844. There were approximately 1000 copies of this first edition produced which can be identified by both quality, type of paper and by the lack of a painted background. Condition: This 1st Edition lithograph is in very good condition with no fading, with minor trimming along the perforated edge. Framing: This lithograph is newly framed. The mat and backing paper are conservation grade materials and should last a lifetime. The lithographs are attached using small pieces of Filmoplast P 90 Plus. The glass is OP-3 acrylic to protect against fading from UV radiation. This piece should not be placed in sunlight. Shipping and Handling I ship using new boxes. The lithographs are well protected from shipping damage. I typically ship using the US postal Service ground or priority method. Returns/Pricing I allow for returns within 30 days as long as the lithograph is returned in the original packaging. I strive to accurately describe these beautiful pieces of art. These lithographs are from the 1800’s (pre civil war) and as a result have had a long life associated with aging. I price my items well below typical retail prices, especially when considering the cost of archival framing. Some galleries will charge well over $300 for archival framing. I base the price on the edition, condition, comparable value, and my cost.
