Description: The 2008-S Bald Eagle Half Dollar is a notable commemorative coin commemorating the removal of the bald eagle from the endangered species list after 35 years.Obverse design: The obverse of the coin shows a touching scene: a pair of baby eagles nestled in a nest, just a few days old. An unhatched egg lay before them, large leaves and branches provided warmth and protection. Above the eagles appears the slogan “IN GOD WE TRUST”, with the word “LIBERTY” on the right, accompanied by a star and the year “2008”.Reverse design: The reverse features a close-up of Challenger, a live bald eagle. Behind the Challenger is the flag of the United States of America. Above the flag is the name “CHALLENGE”, and to the left is “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.Below the Challenger appear the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, along with the mint mark “S” and the denomination “HALF DOLLAR”.Endangered Species Story: Challenger, the eagle engraved on the coin, symbolizes the success of the Endangered Species Act of 1973. After falling from Nested in 1989, Challenger was exposed to humans and could not survive in the wild.
