The U.S. Mint first issued this design in 1946, soon after the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The Mint released it on January 30 of that year to honor his birthday. The obverse (heads) shows Roosevelt’s profile. The torch, olive branch, and oak branch on the reverse (tails) represent liberty, peace, and strength. The dime was a logical choice for honoring Roosevelt because he supported the March of Dimes, a program that raised funds for research to find a cure for polio. He contracted polio when he was 39 years old. The Mint made the first dimes in 1796. They were small silver coins. The designs from 1796 to 1837 showed Liberty on the obverse and an eagle on the reverse. In 1837, a wreath design replaced the eagle. Liberty, in various forms, stayed on the dime until 1946. From 1916 to 1945, the Mint produced the “Mercury” dime designed by Adolph A. Weinman. The obverse showed a profile of Liberty wearing a cap with wings to represent freedom of thought. The design got its name because it reminded people of the Roman god, Mercury. A fasces – a bundle of rods tied around an axe – and an olive branch appeared on the reverse. The two symbols represented America’s military readiness and the desire for peace. The Mercury dime is considered one of the most beautiful coins in our country’s history. In 1965, the Mint removed silver from the dime and the composition became copper-nickel clad. Obverse (heads): Shows the left-facing bust of Franklin D. Roosevelt, featured since 1946. Reverse (tails): Displays a torch with an olive branch to the left of it and an oak branch to the right. The torch signifies liberty, the olive branch peace, and the oak branch represents strength and independence.* *United States coin information from the United States Mint.   Stock Photo*   About Us RoamingRevs are women clergy who sell coins and curiosa found, made, or purchased "on the journey" from regular folks and/or small businesses. Orders placed on weekends or holidays will be shipped on the next business day. Orders over $200 require signature on delivery. eBay Standard Envelope Service:  We ship many coin orders (three or less coins weighing under three ounces) in 2x2 flips using via United States Postal Service (USPS) First-Class mail using eBay Standard Envelope labels. You need to use eBay’s website software to track these envelopes. Note that these envelopes travel through the USPS network slowly. As well, note that USPS may also be slow in updating tracking information to the eBay software. High Speed Sorters: The USPS First-Class mailing system by default processes standard envelopes through high-speed sorters. This can, and does, damage coins. It also can cause other shipping issues, such as delayed delivery. If you DO NOT wish your coins to go through high-speed sorters, you can add a small additional fee ($0.58) to your purchase and we will forward this payment to the USPS for your item as a service for our customers. Your order will not be run through high-speed postal sorters while still benefiting from eBay Envelope's tracking service. This method is highly recommended by us AND meets all of the USPS requirements for sending coins though their system. If you wish this service for your order, choose "First Class" shipping at checkout. Combined Shipping Discount: We cheerfully Combine Shipping charges for all the items in your shopping cart at the time of purchase. This is done automatically for you in eBay's checkout procedure. If there is an issue combining, please message us BEFORE paying the invoice. Once an invoice is paid, we can no longer offer a Combined Shipping discount. Combined shipping is NOT available on items that include free shipping. International Shipping: We will ship allowed items internationally and only through eBay International Shipping. There is no free option for International shipping. General Information All coins are guaranteed authentic - bid with confidence. We do not guarantee grades from Third Party Grading Services. Many less expensive and bulk items make more sense to use a "sample" photograph rather than photographing each individual lot.
