Here's some history on the school: Army and Navy Academy is a college-preparatory boarding school for boys, grades 7–12, in Carlsbad, California. It was founded in 1910. The Academy was founded by Colonel Thomas A. Davis on November 23, 1910. It was originally located in the Pacific Beach neighborhood of San Diego, California. In 1936, the Academy moved to Carlsbad, California, where it opened as the Davis Military Academy. The Academy was renamed as the San Diego Army and Navy Academy upon the move. In 1944, "San Diego" was dropped from the name, resulting in the school's current name: Army and Navy Academy. The Academy was notably led by William Currier Atkinson, who served as the Academy's president for fifty years. Army and Navy Academy is a private military boarding school. The Academy is governed by a Board of Trustees composed of philanthropists, Academy alumni, and current and past parents. The Academy's president is Mark Desjardins, PhD, who previously served as the Headmaster of St. John's School in Houston, Texas. The Dean of Academics is Ethan Segovia, and the Assistant Dean of Academics is Amy Coe. The Academy is organized into a middle School (grades 7 & 8) and a high school (grades 9 - 12). The high school conforms to a college preparatory curriculum that follows the University of California A-G requirements for graduation. The Academy's instructional philosophy is built around a single-gender educational model targeted toward the educational needs of boys. All cadets participate in JROTC leadership courses in addition to their normal academic class schedule. The JROTC program at Army and Navy Academy, led by Senior Army Instructor LTC Curby Scarborough, consists of four levels of Leadership Education Training (LET) instruction. Cadets earn rank through their performance in LET courses and, when merited, gain promotions within the Corps of Cadets. Top cadet leadership positions are determined through the Leadership Candidate Course (LCC). After LCC has ended, a Selection Committee meets to decide who best fits each position. Committee members include the Academy President, Senior Army Instructor, Commandant of Cadets, JROTC instructors, faculty leaders, and academic counselors. Leaders are selected based on their past performance and potential for growth. The Corps of Cadets consists of an Army-style battalion divided into companies, including Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Echo, Band, and Headquarters companies. Additionally, there are several company detachments: The Lower School Honor Guard detachment, consisting of the Stoll's Guard Drill Team and the Lower School Color Guard, is officially a part of Echo Company. The Upper School Honor Guard detachment, consisting of the Davis Guard and the Upper School Color Guard are detachments consisting of all upper school companies. The rank structure at Army and Navy Academy is similar to that of the United States Army. Upon admittance, new cadets have no rank and referred to as plebes. Plebes must undergo basic training on Academy history and professional knowledge, and must additionally complete their first parade and military review, before becoming a full member of the Corps of Cadets.
